As computers and laptops get older so does the technology thats inside them, the older the technology the less cost effective it is to upgrade and the harder to find compatible hardware that will suit your system becomes. Most of the hardware thats over 3 years old is usually available on auction sites such as Ebay but can be bought brand new but this is usually slightly higher than more up to date components and unfortunately it sometimes becomes more cost effective to buy brand new.

 

Computers can be easily upgraded if the components are available, the usual upgrade is memory or hard drive but other components such as graphics card are very easily done and can be quite reasonable priced.

 

Laptops are not as upgradeable as computers and usually more memory or bigger hard drive is the best your going to get but neverless this can make a significant improvement on performance.
